There is no big secret on how to get your abs showing simply because your abs are just like any other muscle in your body with only one great exception. It is that one exception that makes the abs or your abdominal cavity the central core of your own specific strength.
The ab exercises that you should do on a regular basis should not be done more than four times a week and you need to train hard and short concentrating on focus and intensity. Doing a thousand crunches every day will not get you abs, you need to be specific if you want serious abs.
Before discussing the best abs exercises you should know that you are not going to get abs that you can see without eating correctly and without increasing your core strength. Gaining muscle by doing compound exercises will put on muscle all over your body and make you stronger at the same time.
So with all that said we need to concentrate on intensity and to be able to increase the resistance when we are able to do 30 reps. But the most important factor when getting the measurable results is focus which means taking extra care to isolate the specific section of abs that you are working on.
For example locking your arms out on a dipping bar and lifting your knees up to your chest and holding that position for a count of 5 will achieve the necessary focus required. You can go a step farther by tilting your hips up a bit so that you can increase the tension on your abs.
Another one is opposite arm and leg raise which can be done on a mat at home where you concentrate on the twist so that you are specifically isolating the obliques as well as your upper and lower abs. This exercise needs to be done slowly and without any momentum.
The other lower abs exercises that you can do are things like leg raises and hip flexor exercises which will be able to specifically isolate your lower abdominals. These exercises should all be done hard, intense and short and not to continue for more than 20 minutes for a good abs workout.
As mentioned above the only way that you are going to increase the thickness of your abdominal cavity wall is by getting stronger and the only way that you are going to get stronger is with progressive resistance. This simply means that by doing compound exercises like squats, deadlift and bench-press you will be putting on more muscle and increasing your core strength.
