There are two very different arguments when it comes to training your abs. The first is argument is that you never need to train your abs because as you get stronger your abdominals will get thicker if you are training correctly. There are many top bodybuilders who never train abs still today.
The second argument is that the stronger your abs get the stronger you will get as your central core strength will increase as it makes you stronger and therefore able to lift more weight and get more muscle as a result. This article will be concentrating on the second argument and training your abs.
The training of your abs should be done on a regular basis in order to increase your strength and the amount of resistance that you can handle. But having said that doing a thousand crunches every day is useless and you will not get the results that you are looking for.
You first need to make sure that you are able to isolate your abs when you train them. What that means is that you need to specifically isolate your lower abdominals and upper abdominals when you train your abs. This can be done by using your own bodyweight when you start and then slowly increase the resistance in order to thicken your abs.
Your lower abdominal exercises are movements like leg raises, hanging leg lifts, hip flexor exercises as well as bicycle kicks and thrusts. Training your upper abs will be anything from crunches, inverted sit-ups, sit-ups, twist crunches and bicycles kicks using an elbow to knee movement.
The specific training your oblique's is something that will take care of itself as you get stronger and it is the opinion of the writer of this article that it is not necessary to specifically isolate the oblique's. As your inner core strength increases so will your abdominal cavity increase in thickness generally.
When training high intensity workouts it is better to keep your abs at the end of your workout. This does not mean that you will be less intense when training your abs because it is at the end of your workout but you need to only spend about ten minutes on abs to reach failure when done correctly.
The abdominals are just like any other muscle and will respond to an increase of intensity as well as an increase in the resistance used. There are many ways that you can increase the resistance that you use by holding dumbbells as well as using weights on your legs when doing leg raises etc.
